AED DeviceHiawatha Elementary has been given an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) by the good people at Mercy Medical Center.  An AED is a device that may save a life in the event of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).  SCA is the nation’s leading killer, taking over 300,000 lives annually.

An AED is an FDA approved device that will deliver a shock to the heart if it detects a dysrhythmia causing the heart to pump blood ineffectively.

When someone collapses and is unresponsive, the AED can be brought to that person immediately.  Survival chances improve from 5% to 60% if an AED is used within 2 to 4 minutes of the collapse!

Our new AED is located in the main lobby on the wall next to the gym door.  There are signs throughout the building noting its location.  It is in an alarmed cabinet that will sound when the door is opened.

The Hiawatha “First Responder” Team will be trained on how to use the AED, and the school staff will also be given information about its use.  If someone collapses and is unresponsive outside of school hours, a layperson can also use the AED to help.   Once the AED is turned on, it will tell a responder how to use it to help an unresponsive person.   If you can use a cell phone, you can use an AED and you could save a life!!!
